Wash4School

Healthy Students. Thriving Schools. Brighter Futures.

The Crisis in Ghana’s Schools Across Ghana, thousands of schools especially in rural and under-served areas lack basic ‘Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)’ infrastructure. Children attend schools without clean drinking water, without toilets, without handwashing facilities. The consequences are devastating:
  • Girls miss school during menstruation due to lack of private, dignified sanitation facilities
  • Children fall sick from poor hygiene, leading to absenteeism and poor academic performance
  • Teachers struggle to maintain healthy learning environments
  • Open defecation around school compounds exposes children to diseases
  • WASH4School exists to change this.

What We Do

WASH4School is dedicated to creating safe, healthy learning environments by improving ‘Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)’ infrastructure in rural and under-served schools. Under this program, we:
  • Build and rehabilitate water points so pupils and teachers have reliable access to clean water on school grounds. No child should be thirsty while learning.
  • Provide gender-sensitive sanitation facilities, including separate and dignified toilets for girls and boys. Privacy and dignity matter, especially for adolescent girls.
  • Promote hygiene education, teaching handwashing, menstrual hygiene management, and safe water practices. Knowledge empowers lifelong healthy behaviors.
Impact Overview

Why WASH4School Matters

With proper WASH facilities, children—especially girls—are more likely to:

Attend & Stay in School

Girls no longer miss school during menstruation. Children aren't sent home sick from waterborne diseases.

Learn Effectively

Healthy, hydrated students concentrate better and perform better academically.

Thrive in Safety & Dignity

Access to private toilets and handwashing stations fosters dignity, confidence, and wellbeing.

Education transforms lives. But education requires health. And health requires water and sanitation.

Methodology

Our WASH4School Approach

01

School Assessment

We work with school administrators, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), and District Education Offices to assess WASH needs and prioritize schools with the greatest need.

02

Infrastructure Development

We construct or rehabilitate vital facilities:

  • Water points: Boreholes with taps and rainwater harvesting systems
  • Toilet blocks: Separate facilities for girls (including menstrual hygiene management provisions) and boys
  • Handwashing stations: Fitted with soap dispensers
03

Hygiene Education

We train teachers and students on essential practices:

  • Proper handwashing techniques (critical for preventing disease)
  • Menstrual hygiene management for girls
  • Safe water handling and storage
  • Environmental sanitation around school compounds
04

Community Engagement

We involve PTAs and community members in maintaining school WASH facilities, ensuring long-term sustainability beyond our intervention.
